“Italy is a developed nation with extensive infrastructure, a rich
cultural history, and control over several exports. Italy has the
eighth-highest nominal gross domestic product (GDP) in the world at
$1.16 trillion; the country's per capita GDP stands at $35,896”.
I will suggest that Nigeria reduce the size of its parliament.
The Senate and the House of Representatives are a duplication - one
should be scrapped and the other be made as one Senator/HOR Member per
state.
In addition to this,
parliamentarians shouldn’t work on full time basis but on a part time.
They should converge once a week to perform their duty, that would be
enough and more productive.
Video conferencing is an available
tool of technology that can be embraced to vote and deliberate if
required. A serving Senator away in New York can dial in to join the
session just as the one in Ghana won’t miss a thing. It’s no longer the
era of flying private jets from across the nation and out of it to
Abuja just to say “Nay” or “Yay” then sleep off!!
They can drive
their own cars, live in their homes and they must be professionals with
their own career who have genuine interest in contributing to the
development of the people and the country.
The current approach and system is too expensive and not sustainable.
